Triumph
Trident 660 ( 2024)

The Trident 660 is Triumph’s very pretty, retro looking Mid size CC naked bike powered by the companies 660cc triple motor as found in dome of it’s other models. The bike ( seen here in black paintwork which adds to the retro feel looks small compared to others. The overhang of the seat over the back wheel is also small which adds to it’s diminutive looking size. The bike has a single gauge that covers everything you need information for which sits with the companies motif proudly displayed. Other features of the bike are the single exhaust slung down low, grab handles for passengers that come out of the sides that are slick and follow the lines of the bike as well as the number plate being position low down in covering the back wheel. With a brand new starting price of under £8k and a fully loaded bike with the every possible extra ticked in the Triumphs catalogue you can have heated grips and a fly screen to give you a bit more comfort on longer, colder rides. Are there any disadvantages of this bike, well not really, the bike is well equipped, cheap to own and run, pretty and has Triumph’s tried and tested triple engine. As with any naked bike there isn’t any real wind protection but other than that if the style suits your image you can’t go wrong with the Trident.
Pro’s – Cost- New without extras’ its under £8k , Style & Looks
Cons – Nothing really other than wind protection.
Rating – 9.5/10

Speed Triple 1050 Abs (2015)

What a fantastic bike this is, real old school cool as Bulby has said. Now the bike itself doesn’t have the gadgets and gizmo’s you’d find on Bulby’s other bike in the photo, the S1000xr and compared to that it is very spartan. There are no rider modes, traction control or TFT screens with your phone connected, no quick-shifter up and down and this bike had added an after market gear indicator but that’s why Bulby wanted it. Something different to what he had, something which is about riding pleasure at the weekend.
When Triumph designed and built this bike they didn’t give a rats arse about mass weight centralization, they thought high level twin exhausts , that looks cool, where can we stick the battery up up under the tank, great, but trust us when we say you really won’t care when you ride this thing. The famous triple engine has about 140bhp but it has oodles of torque and pulls and pulls, the gear changes are slick but firm, the sound is beautiful especially as it had these Arrow cans fitted (DB Killers out). The bike is so surefooted on the road it inspires confidence, it really is beautiful to ride, in red as this one is it also looks stunning.
Downsides , well being a naked there’s not much in the way of wind protection so we wouldn’t want to do miles and miles on a motorway without fitting a screen and if you want gadgets look elsewhere but other than that this bike is near perfect and is also comfortable as well which will allow for all day hooning around those A -roads.
Pro’s – Muscle bike looks, Single sided swing arm, Arrow cans, Noise, Triple
Cons – Wind protection
Rating – 9.5/10

Tiger 1050 Sport

With the same engine as the Speed Triple the 1050 Tiger gives you all the fun of the naked bike with the comfort to travel distance. Seen her in a striking metallic Grey colour the Tiger is a comfortable long distance sport tourer with the flexibility and torque of the companies well tried and tested Triple. Equipment levels are not particularly extensive with this bike having ABS and heated grips but the saddle is quite comfortable although on the tall. This is a really great cost effective way into the world of Sports Tourers and although packing some 50bhp less than say the BMW S1000XR the savings are substantial and some would say the Tiger has all the power needed.
Pro’s – Triumph’s brilliant 1050cc 114bhp triple engine, Single sided swing arm, Looks, Comfort
Cons – Lacks tech and gadgets of others
Rating – 9/10

Street Triple 2008

Well, well, well this bike is a real surprise, lady’s and gents meet the 675cc Street Triple from Triumph. This is the 2008 model in a striking lime green, running 109bhp, the triple engine gives the low down torque of a V twin married to the power of a straight line 4. Happy to rev to 12k rpm for a small engine bike this machine flies and fitted with the aftermarket cans is happy to tell you it’s doing it. It feels light to move around and with what appears to be a low comfortable seat height it gives great confidence for all riders particularly ones that are under tall, This really is a great bike with good build quality and distinct character, add a fly screen and ear plugs and you have a great all-round bike that you can have a lot of fun on, the only thing this bike is currently in need of is a wash.
Pro’s – Engine, Looks, Paint, Sound
Cons – Wind protection, Sound over time
Rating – 9/10

Rocket 3 GT (2019 on)

The Rocket 3 GT is a very capable and comfortable behemoth of a bike, with the 2.5litre in line triple pushing out 165bhp and 163ftlb of torque this bike as you’d expect is one rapid machine hitting 0-62mph in just under 2.75 seconds and not for the fainted hearted although the electronics package keeps it all well under control. The low seat allows you confidence when moving slowly something that is a surprise with a bike of this weight and size. The Gt version comes with a pillion back rest, heated grips, a fly screen for wind protection (which works really well) and a pair of semi rigid side panniers. This bike is immense in every sense of the word, why not give one a go if you’re brave enough!
Pro’s – Power, look, sound, 2.5litre in line triple
Cons – Heavy, Thirsty, Cost to buy
Rating – 9.5/10

Tiger 1200 Explorer

The Explorer 1200 is a very good bike, owned by Bee Gee and brought from new ‘Gus’ as it was affectionately known was well equipped and comfortable with heated grip, cruise, adjustable screen to name just a few of the great features. The 1160cc in line three cylinder pushes out a very healthy 150bhp making this bike rapid in the right hands.
As with any bike of this style it’s not small however with the 1200 it feels your sat in it rather than on it with gives a feel of confidence when riding.
Although Bee Gee loved this bike it was let down by the drive shaft seals leaking which after three years were out of warranty and for which Triumph were expecting a hefty fee for replacing which soured the reason for having a bike with shaft drive rather than a chain.
For anyone considering a long distance go anywhere, two up all terrain bike and that don’t fancy the increased costs of BMW’s GS1200 or the build quality of a KTM get yourself down to a Triumph dealer and get a test ride as we believe you’ll be amazed at how good a bike the big Triumph is.
Pro’s – Shaft drive, integral luggage, heated grips, cruise control
Cons – Cost for a fully loaded one, Shaft drive seals let go
Rating- 8.5/10
